Chapter Twelve

Harlan

One month later

Things changed drastically for all three of us after we spent our first night tangled up in bliss. I let go of my inhibitions and accepted my feelings for Kacey. They simmered below the surface the first night I saw her at the bar, but they didn’t flourish until I took her virginity. It was a different feeling for me—one that I never truly had with my ex-wife. Perhaps I always knew the relationship was poisonous, but I was blinded by my perception of love. It didn’t have to be so fucking complicated. I didn’t have to let it destroy the man I was. It was so much better when I could embrace my passion and let lust consume me. The lust tangled with love, and I knew I felt both for Kacey. Nothing else mattered.

“Good morning.” Kacey walked into the kitchen and rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

“You slept late.” I looked up at her and chuckled.

“We must have worn you out—again.” Gabe stood and poured her a cup of coffee.

“Yeah, it’s becoming a nightly occurrence, which makes for some long days.” She giggled and yawned when she sat down at the table. “One more day, then the weekend. I can do that.”

Kacey tried working and going to school in the beginning, but it was a lot of time apart. It also wasn’t necessary since Gabe was being extremely generous. He suggested that she stop working and focus entirely on school—well, school and the relationship growing between us. It was nice to be able to get off work and come home to someone I truly adored. It showed me how different life could be when the relationship was tainted by poison. I was eager and excited every day. When the clock started to wind down the final hour each afternoon, I could hardly sit still in my seat. Gabe seemed to have the same issue, although he didn’t make it home as early as I did. His work sometimes followed him too, but we still had a lot of fun when it was done.

“So, what are we going to do about the holidays?” Gabe looked around the table. “Kacey, I’d love to have your mom and little sister join us for Thanksgiving.”

Is Gabe actually planning something that far out?

“Maybe.” Kacey sighed and nodded. “I’ve talked with her a couple of times on the phone. I told her things were better now and we’re going to get together soon. I’ll bring it up.”

“If you were already planning something, we don’t want to pull you away from your family.” I raised my eyebrows and tilted my head.

“No, not at all.” Kacey leaned back and shook her head. “My dad always offers, but I’m just not ready for that yet. My mom hasn’t felt much like celebrating since he left, so she doesn’t normally go all out. I haven’t been much help…”

“You’re doing a lot better now.” I reached over and patted her hand. “Honestly, I thought it would be harder for you to outrun those demons.
